Jackson County Parks opens new Pickleball Courts

Jackson County Parks is serving up something new! County Executive Phil LeVota and Jackson County Parks officials celebrated the grand opening of Truman Courts at Fleming Park, the first pickleball courts built in the Jackson County Parks system, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, October 16, 2026.
Located at 3552 Rennau Drive in Lee's Summit, the new $407,820 facility features four pickleball courts that will be free and open to the public.
“Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and we're excited to bring it to Jackson County Parks,” said County Executive Phil LeVota. “My wife, Lanette, is an avid pickleball player, so I know firsthand how much people enjoy this sport. These courts are a great addition to our parks system and another way we're creating opportunities for residents to get outside, stay active, and have fun.”
Nearly 100 years ago, Harry S. Truman served as Jackson County's Presiding Judge, the County Executive at that time. He helped establish our County Parks Department and laid the foundation for the park system we enjoy today.
In the 1950s, Judge Harry Fleming continued that vision. Under his leadership, voters approved a $3 million bond issue, the Parks Department was reestablished, and work began on Lake Jacomo. Fleming Park was later named in his honor.
“The Truman Courts at Fleming Park pay tribute to two men whose leadership helped shape one of the finest county parks systems in the country. And today, we're proud to continue that legacy with four new pickleball courts for our residents to enjoy,” LeVota said.
Construction began in July 2026, with the project remaining on schedule and within budget. Jackson County Parks Superintendent of Park Operations Brian Welborn worked closely with project partners Tarkett Sports and US Engineering to complete the facility.
The Fleming Park location was selected for its convenient access from several major routes, including Interstate 470, U.S. Highway 40, Colbern Road, Todd George Road, and Highway 7.
Friday’s celebration included remarks from County Executive LeVota, Jackson County Parks Director Michelle Newman and Scott George of Tarkett Sports, followed by an official ribbon cutting, a ceremonial first serve with legislators Venessa Huskey and Sean Smith and the first match on the new courts.
