Jackson County issues urgent fraud alert regarding State Tax Commission actions

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jackson County recognizes the concerns and confusion many residents are experiencing due to the State Tax Commission's recent decision to dismiss their lawsuit with prejudice, while also issuing an unlawful and unprecedented order regarding the 2023 assessed valuations in Jackson County. We understand that increasing home values, coupled with the inconsistent and inaccurate assessments of the past, have created significant uncertainty and anxiety in our community.

Adding to this confusion is the creation and distribution of a fraudulent document falsely claiming to be issued by the Jackson County Collection Department. This document is not authorized, created, nor accepted by Jackson County, and its distribution is causing further distress to our community.

The County Executive has referred this matter to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, who is aware of the allegations and has begun a preliminary investigation. If you have any information pertinent to this investigation, please contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division at (816) 541-8017.

We are also asking the media for their assistance in this matter. A copy of the fraudulent document is attached to this alert, and we ask the media to be careful in how it is displayed, as it is not an official county form despite purporting to be one.

Jackson County remains committed to addressing these challenges with transparency and accountability. We urge residents to stay informed and reach out to local authorities with any concerns they may have.
