KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jackson County Executive Frank White, Jr. has issued the following statement regarding today’s announcement that Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell is resigning:
“Six years ago, our community welcomed Dr. Bedell and his family to Jackson County with high expectations of turning around our beloved Kansas City Public Schools District. Together we watched him face each challenge head on, with a fervent mindset to break down barriers and systems that hindered a high-quality education for kids in Kansas City. Today, we can proudly say that KCPS, under Dr. Bedell's leadership, has made significant progress to increase student achievement, mostly notably evidenced by the district receiving full accreditation earlier this year for the first time in a decade. Witnessing first-hand the transformation of KCPS under his direction has only increased my pride as a graduate of the district, and I am confident that many in the community feel the same. I admire Dr. Bedell’s courage, strength and determination for our community and its children. He brought a passion for education that is unmatched and while we will miss that, he has left a strong foundation for us to build on. Thank you Dr. Bedell for a job well done. You and your family will always have a home in the heartland.”
