Walktober 2026: Kemper Outdoor Education Center

Celebrate the beauty of fall by walking a different trail every Sunday in October. With crisp air, vibrant colors, and scenic views, it’s the perfect time to get outside and get moving. Each week showcases a new trail, highlighting autumn’s most spectacular landscapes while encouraging healthy, active living. Leashed dogs are welcome to join the fun. The first 200 participants at each location will receive a commemorative Walktober button designed by artist Brooke Wangwe—collect all four by attending every event!

Join us Sunday, October 11, for Walktober at the Kemper Outdoor Education Center, one of Jackson County Parks’ hidden gems in Fleming Park — and home of the annual Dogtober Fest!

We’ll kick things off at 10 a.m. with a one mile walk along the scenic Western Auto Habitat Trail. Explore at your own pace or join us at 10:30 a.m. for a guided walk through four unique Missouri ecosystems — a seasonal wetland, tallgrass prairie, cactus glade and forest community.

Along the way, explore the wetland boardwalk, native pollinator and butterfly gardens, koi and water gardens, Kemper Pond and Kemper House while discovering the plants and wildlife that call the area home.

The morning will also feature our Quick Paint event, with local artists capturing the beauty and fall colors of the Kemper grounds as you walk. Artists interested in participating are encouraged to sign up in advance.

And because Kemper is home to Dogtober Fest, bring your four-legged walking buddy along for Walktober! All dogs must be kept on a leash.

The first 75 participants will receive a special Walktober Bandana for their dog.
