Taxing jurisdictions in Jackson County will be meeting over the next few weeks to discuss and set their levy rates.
A levy rate is a tax rate, most associated with property taxes, that determines the amount of tax owed on a property. The rate is set by a local government or taxing authority to generate the revenue needed to fund public services, such as schools, libraries and fire departments.
A levy rate is often expressed in “mills,” where one mill is equal to one dollar of tax for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. Each taxing jurisdiction determines how much revenue they need for the year and sets its own mill rate to meet its budget.
Everyone is encouraged to attend a meeting of their taxing jurisdiction’s levy meetings to witness how their tax amounts are determined.
