The Jackson County Public Health Department is expanding its Narcan Porchbox program in an effort to reduce opioid overdose deaths in Jackson County.
The program provides 24 hour a day free access to Narcan and Nalaxone, fentanyl test strips and overdose information, providing free resources to prevent opioid overdoses.
Narcan is a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses and save lives. One kit includes two doses of Narcan nasal spray, a CPR face shield, fentanyl test strips and other resources.
The program started in January and has boxes at three Raytown fire stations, a Buckner clinic and the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce. All locations are in areas identified as hot spots for fatal and nonfatal overdoses.
Jackson County Public Health is looking for more community partnerships throughout eastern Jackson County to tackle the opioid crisis. Plans include placing vending machines in Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs that would be filled with Narcan and COVID tests along with other essentials like socks, first aid kits and menstrual products.
