Jackson County will be hosting several exciting events during the first Saturday in May 2026.

The family fun begins Saturday morning with the 43rd Annual Kid’s Fishing Derby at Lake Jacomo. Young anglers aged two to 15 are invited to show off their fishing skills at this free event. Enjoy casting contests, raffles and the heaviest fish competition. The first 200 participants will receive a free fishing pole thanks to our partners at Pure Fishing. Bring your own rod, reel, bait and a bucket for weighing your catch. No pre-registration required.

The derby will be at Lake Jacomo South Boat Dock with registration beginning at 8:15 a.m. and competition from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

Watch our flock of sheep receive their annual shearing during Missouri Town Living History Museum’s annual Sheep Shindig. Try your hand at spinning and weaving and explore the wool-making process from shearing to carding with our living history interpreters. Discover the importance of wool in 19th-century life while enjoying family-friendly fun, games, crafts and music.

The event will be held at Missouri Town Living History Museum from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Get a look inside the sometimes-turbulent friendship between Eleanor Roosevelt and the man who replaced her husband in the Whitehouse, President Harry S Truman, during Omnibus Theatre’s presentation of “The Readings Between Eleanore Roosevelt and President Truman”. The free event will feature Nancy Eppert as Eleanore and John Pritchard as President Truman.

Roosevelt was the longest serving first lady of the United States, during her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four terms as president from 1933 to 1945. Over the years, she and Truman exchanged more than 250 letters. The correspondence shows that although the two often disagreed, she was a trusted advisor.

The event will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the Brady Courtroom inside Historic Truman Courthouse in Independence.
