FILING OPENS

The opening date to file a declaration of candidacy for the primary election is Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at 8 a.m.  (last Tuesday in February prior to the election, RSMo 115.349.2)

FILING DEADLINE

The deadline for filing declaration of candidacy is Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at 5 p.m.  (last Tuesday in March prior to the election, RSMo 115.349.1)

 

WITHDRAWAL DEADLINE

Any person who has filed a declaration of candidacy for nomination and wishes to withdraw as a candidate shall file a written sworn statement of withdrawal in the County Clerk's Office.  

Withdrawal deadline for the August 6, 2024 Primary Election is Tuesday, May 21, 2024  at 5 p.m.  (11th Tuesday prior to the primary election per 115.359.1 RSMo.)

Withdrawal deadline for the November 5, 2024 General Election is Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at 5 p.m. (11th Tuesday prior to the general election per 115.359.1 RSMo.)

 

BALLOT POSITION

The ballot position will be determined by the date and time the candidate files his/her declaration of candidacy.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

PROSECUTING ATTORNEY

The prosecuting attorney shall have been admitted to practice law in the State of Missouri, shall be a qualified voter, and shall have been domiciled in the county for at least three years before assuming office. No Prosecuting Attorney may serve more than three consecutive full terms commencing on or after January 1, 2021. The Prosecuting Attorney shall forfeit office if he or she:

1.  Ceases to be a qualified voter of the county;

2.  Removes his or her residence from the county:

3.  Holds any other federal, state, county, or municipal elective office;

4.   Owes federal income tax, Missouri state income tax, or Missouri local tax which remains unpaid for more than twelve months after such tax debt becomes final under the law of the jurisdiction assessing such tax, unless a payment plan to resolve such delinquency is in effect and is current on its terms.

5.   Accepts any loan, gift, or other item of value above $500.00 from any employee, vendor, or contractor of the county, for which services of equal value have not been rendered.

SHERIFF

The sheriff shall be a qualified voter and shall have been domiciled in the county for at least three years before assuming office.  Effective January 1, 1979, the candidate further shall have met, prior to filing for office, the training qualifications required by state law of police officers serving in the first-class charter counties.  No person shall be eligible for the office of sheriff who has been convicted of a felony. No Sheriff may serve more than three consecutive full terms commencing on or after January 1, 2021. The Sheriff shall forfeit office if he or she:

1.  Ceases to be a qualified voter of the county;

2.  Removes his or her residence from the county:

3.  Holds any other federal, state, county, or municipal elective office;

4.   Owes federal income tax, Missouri state income tax, or Missouri local tax which remains unpaid for more than twelve months after such tax debt becomes final under the law of the jurisdiction assessing such tax, unless a payment plan to resolve such delinquency is in effect and is current on its terms.

COMMITTEEMEN AND COMMITTEEWOMEN

A committeeperson shall be a registered voter and a resident of the county and committee district from which he/she is elected for one year next before his/her election.

 

FILING FEE

The filing fee for Prosecuting Attorney and Sheriff is $100.00

The filing fee for committeeman or committeewoman is $25.00

PERSONAL DISCLOSURE

It is also necessary to file a personal disclosure report with the Missouri Ethics Commission, P. O. Box 1370, Jefferson City, MO 65102. Forms are available at https://mec.mo.gov/ or by contacting the Missouri Ethics Commission at 1-800-392-8660.

Filings can be electronically filed, mailed or hand delivered. This only pertains to candidates filing for Prosecuting Attorney or Sheriff.
