Facilities Management is responsible for maintaining Jackson County's buildings. This includes providing a secure physical environment for Jackson County employees and visitors, and maintaining the HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. Facilities Management also manages projects for many of the budgeted capital improvement projects that are undertaken every year.

Managed Buildings

The Facilities Management Division of Public Works is responsible for several buildings including:

  • The Eastern Jackson County Courthouse in Independence
  • The Historic Truman Courthouse in Independence
  • The Jackson County Courtouse in downtown Kansas City
  • The Examiner Building in Independence
  • The Jackson County Board of Elections Building
  • The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office
  • The Jackson County Animal Shelter

Further Responsibilities

This division manages all county janitorial contracts, oversees the recycling program and assists with keeping sidewalks and step cleared of ice and snow in the winter. Its employees pick up litter and monitor the grounds of the buildings as well.

Employees

It takes a lot of staff to accomplish all of the goals of Facilities Management. The division has a Facilities Management Administrator, two carpenters, a plumber, an electrician, two painters, three operating engineers, 11 maintenance workers, two building superintendents, an office administrator and an administrative assistant.

Work Orders

Facilities Management has instituted a computerized method of managing work orders in the most cost-effective and efficient manner possible.
