Protect Your Vehicle & Property

The Jackson County Road Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department will once again be resurfacing roads in the unincorporated area of the county. The procedure we will use requires us to begin the process by repairing and reinforcing the road bed on which the paving materials will be placed. This could be of some inconvenience to local residents.

Every effort will be made to notify residents who live on or near a road that is scheduled to be resurfaced. Signs will go up in advance of the crews arriving. However, weather is always a factor in road construction. Some deviation from the schedule can and will occur if conditions are not right.

Process Steps

Below are the steps that will be taken to complete this process:

  1. Signage: When we are close to starting on your road, signs will go up alerting homeowners and commuters. Because of weather or unforeseen events, we won't be able to give an exact start date or completion date.
  2. Recycle: The road surface will be ground up (recycled) and new rock added to provide the best possible base for extra reinforcement and a longer lasting road surface.
  3. Grading and compacting: After recycling, the road is graded and compacted to prepare for the chip seal surface.
  4. New signs: Signs will be placed closing the road to through traffic and cautioning drivers about fresh oil.
  5. Water will be sprayed over the road to prepare for the final surface
  6. Oil is sprayed over the prepared road bed and rock chips are immediately applied over top of the oil.
  7. Chip seal surface: The surface is rolled smooth.

Cleanup

The oil that is used will not be unattended and will be immediately covered with rock chips. However, should you experience a small amount of transfer on your vehicle, the best product to use is diesel fuel. Other products such as WD40 or Goo Gone can be used. It's best to clean it as soon as possible. There is a possibility that a gust of wind could cause a small amount of oil to drift onto mailboxes or driveways. Prior to the actual resurfacing, you may see crews in the area doing prep work such as clearing out ditches or culverts.

Warning: Driving on the road during repair work while signs are posted may result in oil transfer onto vehicles. Driving on the road during repair work while signs are posted is at your own risk.
