Jackson County initiated a Civil Union Registry in April of 2003. The Registry is provided as a service to the citizens who wish to make their private unions public knowledge. Although neither Jackson County nor the State of Missouri officially recognizes Civil Unions under Missouri Marriage Statutes, the Registry does provide a public means to register one’s relationship and often helps fulfill a requirement by health insurance companies for eligibility under various insurance plans. The Registry, open to all to utilize or inspect, is available at the Recorder of Deeds office in Independence, Missouri. There is no fee to register.
