Enjoying eight years as a seasonal employee

As the summer season nears its close so does the eighth and possibly last season of Thomas Crosby’s work at Longview Marina.

Crosby was 16 and looking for a summer job when his cousin Sarah suggested he join her to work at Longview. It was Sarah’s seventh year at the marina.  “She loved the job and told me it was a great place to work and Dave was fantastic.” Dave Bass is the marina manager.

Crosby agrees that Bass and assistant manager Fritz Ziegler have done a great job in making Longview Marina a great place to work.

“I really enjoy the job here. I enjoy the people. We always have a great staff and a lot of the friends I have made outside of school have been here. Whenever you have a lot of people that you get along with really well or that you can count on it really keeps you coming back,” he said.

“We work on the boats and we deal with customers, but at the end of the day we are at the lake and it is just beautiful.”

Bass said Crosby is one of the originators of Longview’s popular Pirate Cruises and Pirate Birthday Parties. “He has written scripts, directed the pirate actors and helped to build the pirate experience into the popular program it is today.”

The Pirate Cruise starts with all of the children being given a pirate hat and a picture is taken with the pirates. The kids are then sent out on a pontoon boat to look for lost treasure. Pirates soon overtake them and board their boat looking for the treasure. Finding no treasure the pirates send the kids on their way once again in hopes of finding treasure. As they cross the lake the pirates once again stop the boat and announce that they have found the treasure and will share but first all of the kids have to be sworn in as good pirates.

“We want to make sure that the kids understand that we are not trying to steal there gold, we are wanting to give gold out. We are good people,” Crosby said. “So we swear them in as good pirates then we come back here and they get to go through our treasure chest, we feed the fish with them.”

He said the pirate cruises are also fun for staff. “I think it is a great time acting like a pirate and seeing the kids’ reactions to it. We had one staff member this year that didn’t think she would like it. She never wanted to do it, but we needed her. She said she loved it that it was a lot better than she expected it to be.”

When he’s not running the Pirate operation, Crosby is conscientious about keeping Longview’s pontoon fleet running perfectly, and he offers his time in support of other Parks + Rec events including Christmas in the Sky and the former 4th of July Celebration.

“Thomas consistently goes above and beyond for the patrons we serve,” Bass said. “The Longview slip holders and regular customers know they can rely on Thomas to trouble shoot a problem or lend a hand.”

Crosby graduated from University of Central Missouri in December with a degree in Music Education and is currently seeking his first full time job. After getting a teaching job he has thought about coming back to work at the marina during his summer breaks if possible.

“In a high school band job, I would have band camp every summer for two weeks and school starts kind of early and ends in June. So I wouldn’t have as much time here as I have the last few years. If the manager here would like to have me then I would love to keep doing more years here,” he said.
