Medical Examiner Facility Showcased

After recently passing a sales tax that will pay for a new Medical Examiner style office in Kansas. Johnson County is looking for ideas on how the facility should look and run. To help with that process Johnson County commissioners and Health Dept. officials toured Jackson County’s facility on Tuesday.

Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Diane Peterson said, Johnson County’s current coroner is a physician and not a forensic pathologist so a private company is under contract to do autopsies for them. Johnson County is currently working with a consultant for the new facility, but Peterson said, “They wanted to see our facility and what we do and how we do it.” Jackson County’s new Medical Examiner’s facility opened in June of 2015.

Peterson said they also discussed accreditation and what is necessary to achieve that status.

Following the tour, Ed Eilert, Chairman of the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners said, “We appreciate the willingness of Jackson County officials to visit with us and give us a firsthand look at their facility. It was very impressive on all points.”

Officials from Johnson County who joined Dr. Peterson, Jackson County Executive Frank White, Jr., Jackson County Chief of Staff Caleb Clifford and Jackson County Chief of Health Services were:

Johnson County Board of County Commission Chairman Ed Eilert, Major Doug Baker, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office; Jim Allen, County Commissioner - 2nd District; Jason Osterhaus, County Commissioner - 4th District; Maury Thompson, Assistant County Manager; Brad Reinhardt, Facilities Director; James Joerke, Deputy Director of Department of Health and Environment; Julie Alt, County Manger’s Office; Lougene Marsh, Director of Department of Health and Environment; Ron Shaffer, County Commissioner - 1st District; Janice Phillips, Facilities Department Project Implementation Manager; Steve Howe, District Attorney; Danni Livingston, Facilities Department Director of Planning Design Construction; Michael Ashcraft, County Commissioner - 5th District and Joe Waters, Assistant County Manager.
