In honor of the 36th annual and largest American Royal Barbecue contest, Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders has officially proclaimed Oct.1-4 as American Royal Barbecue Weekend.
In its first year at Arrowhead Stadium, the World Series of Barbecue will host a record-breaking number of participants: 618 teams, representing 39 states and three countries.
The 90th annual American Royal Parade will also take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 3, at the Jackson County-owned Truman Sports Complex.
The American Royal Barbecue contest began 36 years ago in the parking lot of the Golden Ox Restaurant in Kansas City’s West Bottoms, and the competition has grown to become the world’s largest event of its kind. The 2015 event will take place for the first time at Arrowhead Stadium, bringing together world-renowned pitmasters and backyard barbecue enthusiasts to compete for the title of best barbecue.
In its new, more spacious, quarters, the Royal experience will feature new amenities. They include the Cowtown Family Fun Fest presented by Cerner, food-purchase options from Zarda Bar-B-Q, Plowboys BBQ and others, and the Budweiser Pavilion with a live-music stage featuring regional bands throughout the weekend and on Saturday night country music icons Big & Rich.
The American Royal’s World Series of Barbecue, presented by UMB and Bayer, is the most popular and highly attended event on the professional barbecue competition circuit.
