Medical Examiner’s Office Sends Staff to Joplin to Assist in Disaster Relief

KANSAS CITY, MO – Four members of the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office, including Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Mary Dudley, have been dispatched to Joplin, Missouri to assist in the recovery efforts following Sunday evening’s tornado.

Dr. Dudley, Mike Henderson, Tom Hensley and Megan Minniear reported to Joplin at 9:00 A.M. this morning as members of the Region VII Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT). The team members will be in Joplin for the next two weeks to help in victim identification for fatalities as a result of the tornado.

DMORT’s are Federal Level Response teams designed to provide mortuary assistance during mass fatality incidents. The teams are composed of citizens with various fields of expertise including medical examiners, coroners and pathologists. During a response, a DMORT works with local authorities to recover, identify and process deceased victims.
