Jackson County Executive Names Interim Prosecutor

KANSAS CITY, MO – Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders has named Melissa Mauer-Smith as interim Jackson County Prosecutor. Sanders made the announcement at a press conference this morning at the downtown Jackson County Courthouse.

Mauer-Smith will temporarily replace James F. Kanatzar who has been appointed by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to serve on the 16th Judicial Circuit bench. Kanatzar was sworn in earlier today. Mauer-Smith is a 24 year veteran of the County Prosecutor’s office and currently serves as a Chief Trial Assistant and the Director of Family Support. She is the longest serving senior level manager in the Prosecutor’s Office and previously served as interim Prosecutor in 2007.

Earlier this month, Sanders named an advisory committee to recommend three finalists to fulfill the remainder of Kanatzar’s term as Jackson County Prosecutor. The advisory committee is expected to forward three applicants to Sanders by Friday.
