County Executive Emphasizes Recycling in the Parks with New Program

Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders announced today that the County Parks and Recreation Department has instituted a program, which features 40 state-of-the-art recycling containers installed throughout the Parks system. Each year more than 2 million people enjoy the various attractions in Jackson County Parks. With this announcement County Executive Sanders encourages all citizens to do more recycling while in the parks.

“I can think of no better place than our parks to encourage people to help the environment,” said Sanders. “Through this program, we can give everyone an alternative to tossing cans and plastic bottles in the trash. Instead, they can recycle these materials while visiting Jackson County’s parks. We are making it easy and convenient and together, we are taking another step in expanding the County’s recycling efforts.”

The recycling program includes 34 in-ground units, installed 5 feet into the ground, and six above-ground units. In addition to providing receptacles for recycling, these units are designed to reduce odor, prevent ground contamination and provide a safer, more efficient method for handling materials. Parks staff will remove custom collection bags from each unit and transport them to recycling centers for processing.

To launch the program Jackson County provided a $25,000 match to a $100,000 grant from the Mid-America Regional Council’s Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The new recycling containers are located throughout Fleming Park with several locations near Lake Jacomo and Blue Springs Lake. Additional containers are located in Longview Lake Park, at facilities in the Blue River District and at the Argo Road Archery Range.

Jackson County Parks and Recreation is recruiting volunteers for its various recycling efforts. The Parks Volunteer Coordinator can be reached at (816) 503-4821.
