Missouri State Senator Victor Callahan (D-District 11) joined Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders in announcing a new tax payment program for Jackson County's senior citizens. The new program will enable seniors, 62 or older, to pay their residential property tax in four installments.
During a news conference at the Jackson County Courthouse, Callahan said he has been concerned about property tax assessment and collections for some time, especially the impact they have on senior citizens. Sanders stressed that the County Legislature already has the authority to adopt the new installment plan for Jackson County seniors. County Legislative Chairman Dennis Waits (3rd District) stated that he anticipates the Legislature will promptly approve the proposed plan.
Sanders recently appointed an Assessment Review Commission to examine the assessment and appraisal process in Jackson County, with the goal of ensuring that the system of assessment will be fair for everyone in the County, particularly seniors and families.
