The Environmental Health Division is responsible for implementing the policies and procedures of the Jackson County Food Code.

All critical violations are corrected within 24 - 72 hours by food service establishments even though the inspection report on the web does not indicate correction.

*Kansas City and Independence perform all inspections within their city limits, and they are not listed here. Kansas City and Independence inspections can be viewed online by visiting each city's website.
Prior to opening a food establishment or mobile food unit for the first time, after a change of ownership or after remodeling, you are required to obtain a Food Establishment or Mobile Food Vendor Permit. You must complete the Food Establishment or Mobile Food Vendor Plan Review/Pre-opening Application. There is a $300 one-time fee for this process. After your establishment has passed the pre-opening inspection, a food permit will be issued. The food permit is renewed annually. The cost for the food permit is determined by the priority type assigned by the health inspector at the pre-opening inspection per Jackson County Food Code, Chapter 40, Schedule 1.

If you are planning to provide food at a celebration or event, you are required to obtain a Temporary Food Permit. You must complete the Temporary Food Permit Application. The fee for this permit is $50 for a permit not to exceed 14 days. A separate permit is required for each event in which a Temporary Food Establishment operates. A $25 late fee will be added to all Temporary Food Permit Applications received less than 48 hours prior to the event date.
Non-profit organizations planning to sell food at a celebration or event, should complete the Non-profit Temporary Food Permit Application. This application is valid for 4 events, each event may not exceed 14 days. The fee for the application is $25. Non-profit organizations must submit proof of 501(c) exemption form or other tax exempt letter with the application.

For information regarding the sale of food at a Farmer's Market, please review the Farmer's Market And Other Public Functions General Information guidelines. For a copy of the Farmer's Market Stall Permit Application, click the link on the right. There is an annual fee of $25 for the permit.
Any individual or business with a restaurant-type food permit that conducts food service activities outside of the permitted establishment, may obtain a Catering Operation Permit. For a copy of the Catering Operation Permit Application, click the link on the right. There is an annual fee of $375 for the permit.
Note: This permit is in addition to the regular Food Establishment Permit.
If you are going to be handling food at any establishment in Jackson County, you are required to have a Food Handler Permit. However, if your food establishment is located in the cities of Kansas City or Independence, you must contact their Health Departments directly for food handler permits.
The Environmental Health Division is now offering online training/permits for food handlers through TAP Series. This new online service allows people seeking permits to access a website 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Applicants must pass the Safe Food Handling Assessment with a 70% score or higher to qualify to receive a Jackson County Food Handler Permit. Please note: This is the only on-line food safety course that Jackson County accepts. The course is audio/visual and is offered in three languages: English, Spanish, and Mandarin.
