Driver charged in passenger’s death
A 31-year-old Kansas City man has been charged with Murder in the 2nd Degree in connection with the death of a passenger in the car he crashed while fleeing police on Sunday, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Anthony C. Harris, dob: 9-15-1982, faces Murder 2nd Degree, Involuntary Manslaughter, Resisting A Lawful Stop and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.*
According to court records, a Raytown police officer initiated a traffic stop Sunday evening near Blue Ridge and James A. Reed Road. Harris was later identified as the operator of the vehicle. He fled police, violating traffic control signals and nearly striking cross traffic. The officer pursued the defendant’s vehicle, which was travelling at an excessive rate of speed through a residential neighborhood. After it became clear that the pursuit was no longer safe, the officer deactivated lights and sirens. At 75th and James A. Reed, police discovered the vehicle had wrecked and Latasha Green, the 31-year-old front-seat passenger, was ejected. Witnesses also told police her 1-year-old son had been ejected and was lying in the roadway, crying. Green died from her injuries on the way to the hospital. The infant was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Initial tests of Harris’s blood indicated intoxication.
Harris is being charged as a persistent offender because he has two prior felony convictions. In March he failed to appear for a hearing for a pending Resisting a Lawful Stop charge. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000.
