Gain a better understanding of the 19th century way of life. Historic interpreters will teach you blacksmithing, how to bake a pie on the hearth, make lye soap and much more!

Pre-registration and payment are required to attend a workshop. Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis until class size is met. Unless otherwise noted, all materials are included in the cost of the workshop and will be provided by the instructor. Workshops not meeting the minimum reservation requirements will be canceled.

English Paper Piecing 

Ages: 18 & up
Time: 9:30 – 4:00
Class Size: 6
Cost: $10.00 plus supplies

This is a two part workshop. Learn a piecing technique that was used as early as the 1770s. During the first session, learn how to make and hand sew the fabric and paper templates together. During the second session, you will learn the finishing techniques required. Basic hand sewing skill required. Intermediate skill level. This table mat will take two sessions and will require homework.

Make soap with lye and lard using the cold water method.  You will be taking home a bar of soap that you have made in the class.

Carving a Spirit Face on a Walking Stick

Ages: 16 & up
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Class Size: 6
Cost: $15.00 plus supplies

Learn how to carve a spirit face on a walking stick. You will also learn how to select and prepare a stick as well as finishing. There is a $5.00 fee for two walking stick blanks payable to the instructor.

Triangle Shawl

Ages: 12 w/adult supervision & older

Learn the simple art form of weaving on a triangle loom to create a shawl (choose adult or child size). Bring yarn and your lunch. You will probably not be able to finish this in one day so plan on returning to finish your shawl. Yarn requirements will be given upon registration. Beginner level.

Continuous Strand Weaving

Ages: 12 w/adult supervision & older
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Class Size: 1-6
Cost: $10.00 plus supplies

Learn the simple art form of continuous strand weaving on either a triangle or a square loom. These are small lap top looms that you can start and finish in one afternoon. Advanced techniques (such as twill or lace) can also be discussed depending on participant interest. Looms will be provided for the workshop and available for purchase should you want to own one after class. Bring yarn and your lunch. Yarn requirements will be given upon registration.

Basket-Friendship Baskets

Ages: 13 w/adult supervision & older

In this workshop you will make two small decorative handled baskets: one to keep and the other to give away. This basket pattern is appropriate for even beginning weavers. A variety of colors will be offered and students will learn several different handle enhancements.

Toothbrush Rug

Ages: 12 & up (w/parents) to adults
Time: 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. with the option to stay later
Class Size: 6
Cost: $10.00 plus supplies

Turn Rags into rugs using a technique that is easy to learn but hard to put down. Learn to make oval rugs and discuss how to make rectangular rugs with a slight change in technique. This is a great way to make custom color rugs from cheerful bright colors to muted cozy colors. Colors of the rugs may vary.

Option to stay until 4:00 p.m. Cost for the supplies is $25.00 and can be purchased from the instructor. Adult supervision required.

Participants will learn basic knitting skills, cast on, knit, and bind off.

Crocheted Rag Rug

Participants will tear their fabric into strips and learn the basics of crocheting a rag rug.

Tote BasketTote Basket

Ages: 13 w/adult supervision & up

The Tote Basket features built in handles below the rim of the basket. Students will have a choice of several colors for the pattern accents. This class is aimed at students with some previous experience weaving. Emphasis will be placed on shaping and spacing skills. A variety of colors will be offered.

Make a small sampler while learning basic embroidery stitches just like young ladies in 1855 would have done. Cost for the supplies is $8.00 and can be purchased from the instructor. The cost of this workshop includes one adult admission.  Adult supervision required.

Apples are not just for pies. We will be using 19th century receipts for different types of apple delights.

Natural Dye Workshop

Ages: 12 w/ adult supervision & older

This will be a workshop on natural dyes for protein fibers using local dyestuffs. There will be 3 dye pots set up-black walnut, osage, and cochineal so bring your fiber in the form of roving, yarn or small garment to dye in one or all 3 pots! Bring a sack lunch. There will be down time while fiber is “stewing” so bring handwork if you like to while away the time.
