ABOUT COMBAT
The Community Backed Anti-drug Tax is utilized to "COMBAT" drug abuse and drug-related crime in Jackson County. COMBAT approaches its mission -- "Making substance abuse history" -- from both a health care and legal perspective, providing funding in three different areas: 1) Prevention, 2) Treatment and 3) Law Enforcement.
COMBAT's History
Throughout the 1980s, drug trafficking and an active drug culture were a part of daily life in the urban core as well as surrounding cities in much of Jackson County. Crack cocaine and other illicit drugs, such as PCP, heroin and marijuana, were openly traded on street corners. Drug houses and meth labs sprang up overnight. One of every two people arrested was a drug user, and as much as 80% of all crime involved illegal drugs. > MORE
COMBAT Review Committee
In March of 2007, within weeks of taking office, Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders appointed a blue-ribbon COMBAT Review Committee to assess the effectiveness of how funds generated through the Community Backed Anti-drug Tax were being utilized. The six key recommendations of that committee began to be implemented in early 2008. > MORE
Drug Commission
