Student Tech Academy (STA) proposes eight (8) 20-hour substance abuse prevention training sessions using computer repair and trouble-shooting skill development courses as the vehicle to deliver meaningful and relevant substance abuse preventing strategies. The target population of the STA is middle-and high school-aged clients from Jackson County’s alternative schools, Family Court’s residential facilities, and foster care centers.

The Department of Emergency Services extends intervention and prevention services to all of the students, staff, and families of the Blue Springs R-IV School District. The Drug Abatement Coordinator assesses, triages levels of need, and treats students and/or families impacted by substance abuse. The Drug Abatement Coordinator designs, schedules, and presents training sessions focused on exposing the maladies of substance use and on improving drug resistance skills for youth.

Smart Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) at tow of our community-based Clubs, Leslie & Hawthorne Units. Smart Moves is a nationally acclaimed comprehensive prevention program that helps young people resist alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, as well as premature sexual activity. SMART Moves has been cited in Creating a Drug Free America: Programs that Work as “one of the very few programs in the country that offer excellent prevention teaching combined with challenging supervised activities.”

The Youth Development Center will provide services to members of the Northeast community who are at risk because of language barriers; lack of knowledge about drugs and related crime and their role in crime prevention; lack of community resources to support prevention activities; and the availability of drugs in the community. The Don Bosco Youth Development Center currently provides prevention services in the form of providing youth a safe and positive environment to expand their knowledge, skills and health, and gain the confidence they need to make the right choices in life.

The Eastern Jackson County Schools Collaborative (EJCSC) proposes a comprehensive three-level approach to substance abuse prevention and crisis intervention of the risk factors and negative behaviors stemming from drug abuse. The focus of this level will be to support positive discipline, academic success, and mental and emotional wellness through a caring school or community environment. This will be accomplished through teaching appropriate behaviors and problem solving skills, positive behavioral support and appropriate academic instructions. The second level, title Early Crisis Intervention, addresses the needs of at-risk students. The third level is the Intensive Intervention level and, as its title indicates, involves specific individualized service delivery to students and/or their families.

This project is directly targeted at those students and families who are experiencing mild to severe truancy problems as well as families where drug use/abuse is suspected as a part of the attendance issues. Poor school attendance is highly related to crime and drug use. This project is aimed at increasing attendance and student performance through identification of issues impacting student attendance, provision of identified resources through school and community supports, continuation of an interagency team to address the issues surrounding student’s attendance and performance as well as drug prevention. (Inclusive of Family Court, Municipal Courts, Schools, Law Enforcement, Prosecutor’s Office, Youth Courts).

KC BizFest teaches Latino and other minority (primarily at-risk) juniors and seniors in high school the skills and intensity necessary to become effective, civic-minded leaders. Interactive teaching techniques, trained instructors and area business volunteers help young people realize they are surrounded by a community that cares about their futures. KC Bizfest is an intense four-day event, but the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Collaborative remains involved with the students throughout the year. It helps young people turn hobbies and skills into profit-making ventures, refining their skills in math, reading, and communication; and prepares them for higher education and the workforce community.

The Guadalupe Center’s, proposed program, P.E.P. Talk (Parental Education Project), will reach approximately 600 Latino parents of Kansas City through out a year round project. Parents will receive a PEP Talk in either Spanish or English via an array of venues. PEP Talk will teach parents about the physical and social impact of alcohol and rugs specifically as it may affect their children. Parents will learn how to identify signs and symptoms of use among their children, become familiar with street names of drugs and their categories and what drugs look like.

Housing Services of Kansas City will contract with Kansas City Community Center to provide the Youth Build Drug Treatment Program for the participants of the Youth Build Program, a joint venture of the Housing Authority of Kansas City and Housing Services of Kansas City. The Youth Build Drug Treatment Program will provide individual and group counseling and education, drug screening, individual treatment plans and supportive case management.

The Truancy Diversion Project-Success Court project includes weekly Success Court sessions for 15-20 students during each semester of the school year. A Circuit Court judge presides over the sessions at Nowlin Middle School. Outreach activities include: weekly Success Court sessions, incentive programming, Family Nights, home visiting, case management, and graduation from the program.

Jackson County CASA is a safety net program for abused and neglected children. Our volunteers are trained to identify report and seek assistance for our children with at risk behaviors. Examples are emotional trauma, anti-social behaviors, anger management and drug issues. The Jackson County Family Court and Jackson County CASA work together to see that the children placed in this agency receive all necessary care required so that our children can become productive citizens in our community.

Changing Lanes is a community service program, in which young people participate in rehabilitating homes within their own communities. It is also a job-training program, in which young people receive on-site training in various skills during their time in the program from qualified instructors and mentors. It is a youth development program, in which young people participate in personal counseling, peer support groups, and life-planning processes that assist them in overcoming negative habits and attitudes, and pursuing achievable goals that will help them establish a productive life, sustain themselves and their immediate families.

AileyCamp uses dance classes, creative writing, percussion and art and combines classes dealing with substance abuse, conflict resolution, violence prevention, sexuality education, peer relationships, self-esteem, health and nutrition to build skills mentally and physically. AileyCamp and AileyCamp the Group set high expectations for students, use positive role models, promotes health and wellness, teach the dangers of drug abuse, and develop new skills.

Mentoring for Success program will serve children, Kindergarten through high school, in the 64109 zip code around the 28th and Troost location and the 64132 zip code around the 75th and Monroe location. This program will work to improve academic and social-emotional learning as well as social competence, by providing positive relationships with adults, academic support, health and wellness education and opportunities, and teaching self-control, problem solving, communication, and emotional awareness through the evidence based play therapy treatment program, “Theraplay.”

Culturally competent after-school programming will concentrate on low-income, predominately Hispanic children grades K-5 in the Northeast. Please note that this program is a “feeder” for the grades 6-12 program in the Prevention application, so that together, both programs form a comprehensive protective web of supportive and preventative services for at-risk youth. This program incorporates the Lion’s quest model, which was designated by SAMSHA’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) as a Model Program. It has proven effectiveness in reducing substance abuse by students with the promotion of protective factors such as interpersonal communication skills, decision-making skills, resistance to negative pressure, and reinforcing pro-social development.

Operation Breakthrough’s Youth Empowerment program includes weekly evidenced-based Second Step violence prevention education to 300 at-risk preschool and school-age children, and a youth development program for the Center’s teens. The curriculum is designed to reduce impulsive, high-risk and aggressive behaviors, including drug/alcohol use, violence, and teen pregnancy, and increase protective factors, including pro-social involvement, positive relationships with adults and peers, and community engagement. The Second Step Program is a research-based social skills curriculum that has been recognized as a Model Program by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Program presenters include OB classroom teachers and UMKC/KU graduate interns.

The Urban Rangers program provides work experience, community service opportunities and assistance in the development and implementation of plans for post-high school careers for at-risk youths 14-18 years old attending high school and residing in zip code area 64130, an inner-city area labeled by the Kansas City Star as the “Murder Factory.” The program consists of two phases. The first phase, Summer Work Experience & Community Service, is a highly disciplined “orientation week” that includes five days of hiking, exercises and training in the use of small hand tools, followed by eight weeks of neighborhood service to paint home exteriors, renovating yards of senior and single-moms, clearing fields and daily behavioral and academic enrichment activities. The second phase, Year-Around Case Management/Coaching, is concerned with assisting the Rangers implement their ICPs action steps, such as tutoring, planning for college and technical schools, taking practice ACT/SAT examinations, preparing for particular internships or training positions with Kansas City employers.
