Gray skies and some rain failed to put a damper on the COMBAT Drug Awareness Picnic held Saturday, September 17 at Jarboe Park in Kansas City. The inclement weather didn't stop families and community members from coming out to support COMBAT's mission. Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker presented the prizes for the COMBAT poetry writing contest.

Public Forum Focuses On Keeping Kids Off Drugs
APRIL 15, 2011 -- The "Full Scope of Hope" public forum COMBAT held April 2 at The View Community Center in Grandview focused on the full range of Jackson County's anti-drug program -- prevention, treatment and law enforcement. But special emphasis was placed on kids and efforts to prevent them from ever using drugs. COMBAT Director Stacey Daniels-Young noted that she and her staff have been conducting meetings with officials from each school district in Jackson County to discuss how to more effectively convey the anti-drug message to students of all ages.

OCTOBER 19, 2010 -- The money raised through the Community Backed Anti-Drug Sales Tax (COMBAT) is making a difference. During an October 16 public forum entitled "The Full Scope of Hope," COMBAT staff and representatives from various programs and agencies funded through the tax described the hopeful signs they've seen that COMBAT has, indeed, helped curb drug abuse and drug-related crime throughout Jackson County. The forum focused on COMBAT's three-pronged approach to combating illegal drugs -- prevention, treatment and law enforcement.

SEPTEMBER 30, 2010 -- The COMBAT-sponsored conference -- "Improving Community Responses to the Risks We See Everyday" -- attracted more than 140 attendees September 24, including representatives of several agencies that have COMBAT-funded prevention and treatment programs. Individuals from throughout Kansas and from Nebraska were also among those in attendance, seeking insight as to how to prevent drug abuse in their communities.

SEPTEMBER 15, 2009 -- The focus was on children during the 15th COMBAT "Annual Drug Awareness Picnic" September 12 at Hill Park in Independence. The picnic featured a "Tomorrow's Future: Today's Youth" theme. Approximately 500 people attended the event hosted by COMBAT. It was held in conjunction with the 20th Annual National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, which the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services sponsors each September.

Area high school bands will be performing throughout the event, and several fun activities for the entire family are being planned. Jackson County has launched a "Take Back Our City!" drive to promote the use of a Countywide drug-crime hotline -- (816) 881-3662 -- being operated by the COMBAT (Community Backed Anti-Drug Tax) staff. County Executive Mike Sanders knows tips play a vital role in solving crimes. As a former County Prosecutor, he also realizes drug-related offenses can escalate to more serious and violent crimes.

APRIL 9, 2009 -- As part of the innovative "Constructing Futures" program, Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders and County Legislator James Tindall Sr. (2nd District) presented keys to a remodeled home to a Kansas City woman and her two daughters. The program, which Sanders unveiled last November, addresses three key issues: vacant and abandoned houses, job-training programs for former offenders and the plight of homeless families.

County Executive Names Senior Staff For COMBAT
FEBRUARY 17, 2009 -- Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders announced today the hiring of three individuals to lead the County's COMBAT (Community Backed Anti-Drug Sales Tax) program. Stacey Daniels-Young will serve as the new Director of COMBAT, and she said the new leadership team looked forward to "building on the success of the program."
