Sheriff's Office Thanked
For Run For The Wall Support

Artie Swift, a Run For The Wall coordinator, presents a plaque of appreciation to Jackson County Sheriff Mike Sharp.

JULY 8, 2011 -- Each May "Run For The Wall" motorcyclists climb aboard their bikes in California and embark on their cross-country journey to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. A part of their annual trek now includes, upon entering Missouri, picking up an escort from the Jackson County Motorcycle Unit for the trip through the Show-Me State.

"I believe it is a privilege to escort Run For The Wall riders safely across Missouri," said Jackson County Sheriff Mike Sharp. "It is a small token of our appreciation to help honor those Americans who sacrificed it all."

Run For The Wall organizers returned to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office Thursday, July 7 to thank Sheriff Sharp and his deputies for their continued support in 2011. The Jackson County Motorcycle Unit has now escorted the Run For The Wall riders across the state for three consecutive years.

Run For The Wall’s mission is "to promote healing among veterans and their families and friends, to call for an accounting of all prisoners of war and those missing in action, to honor the memory of those killed in action from all wars and to support military personnel all over the world."

The Run For The Wall journey through Missouri includes a brief detour off Interstate 70 -- for a parade through historical downtown Concordia, Missouri.

"Whether you are 8 or 89, the sight of hundreds of school children lined on a street waving American Flags in honor of all our veterans is purely inspirational," Sheriff Sharp said.

This year several additional Missouri law enforcement agencies assisted Jackson County and Lafayette County in providing the escort. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, St. Louis County Police, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Wentzville Police Department and the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Office sent officers and deputies to assist Jackson County with the escort. Sheriff Sharp state he and his deputies are committed to providing Run For The Wall escorts forever how long he holds office.
