Sheriff's Office Teams With Former Baseball Star To Get Gifts For Kids In Need
Helping Brighten The Holidays

Sheriff Mike Sharp and former Major League Baseball star Rick Sutcliffe shop for gifts for underprivileged children.

DECEMBER 24, 2009 -- Sheriff Mike Sharp and several Jackson County deputies recently answered a call for help by going shopping. They teamed with former Major League Baseball pitcher Rick Sutcliffe to get gifts for 20 underprivileged children in need of having their holiday seasons brightened.

The Family Court Division of the 16th Circuit Court of Jackson County contacted Sharp about the plight of these children. Many have at least one parent currently incarcerated in either a local or state detention facility. Within an hour, Sheriff deputies passed the hat, raising approximately $750. That amount, added to Sharp's and Sutcliffe's donations, enabled the Sheriff and former Cy Young Award winner to go on a shopping spree. They were able to get a sack full of gifts for each child. They purchased the items at a local Target, which also pitched in with a gift certificate.

An Independence, Missouri, native, Sutcliffe played 15 years in the Majors, earning the Cy Young as top pitcher in the National League while playing for the 1984 Chicago Cubs. Sutcliffe, who retired after pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1994, now works as a baseball commentator for ESPN. He continues to make his home in the Greater Kansas City area, and is active in many philanthropic causes.
