County Executive Mike Sanders announces his intent to form a panel to make recommendations for updating County Charter.

MAY 25, 2010 -- Jackson County voters will have an opportunity to approve a revised Charter when they go to the polls August 3.

Prior to their regular session Monday, May 24, Jackson County Legislators conducted a public hearing about proposed Charter updates. They then decided -- by an 8-1 margin -- to place a revised Charter on the August ballot. The revised Charter includes nearly all the recommendations of the independent Task Force that County Executive Mike Sanders appointed to conduct a comprehensive review of the Jackson County Charter, which voters initially approved in 1970.

"I'd like to thank the members of the Charter Task Force and the County Legislature for their hard work on the most comprehensive review of our Charter since its original passage," said Sanders. "Our goal is to make sure that the changes we've made in the past three years, including ethics reform, become permanent by placing them in the Charter."

The ballot question, including Charter revisions, was expected to be certified by the County Clerk's office today (May 25), the deadline for certification on the August 3 ballot.

In his 2009 State of the County address last November, Sanders stressed that appointing a Charter Task Force and acting on its recommendations would be among Jackson County's chief objectives in 2010.
