Please consider being a part of our team on election day! On election day, more than 1,500 election workers are needed to serve the voters of Kansas City, within Jackson County. This presents a great opportunity to serve your community and be part of the election process. You can join our Election Worker Team by completing the Election Worker form and mailing or faxing it to our office. Our address and fax number is listed on the form.
Election Workers are the Gatekeepers of Our Democracy! ELECTION JUDGE INFORMATION Qualifications - Citizen of the United States
- Resident of Kansas City, within Jackson County
- A registered voter at least 17 years and 6 months of age or older entitled to register to vote in any election which is held on or after their 18th birthday (Mo. Rev. Stat. § 115.133)
- Available to work in any part of the city
Compensation - Election Judge - $100.00
- Supervising Judge - $125.00
- Training session - $ 30.00
Hours - Polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Election workers report to their assigned location no later than 5:00 a.m. to prepare for 6:00 a.m. poll opening.
- Following the 7:00 p.m. close of polls, all election workers assist Supervising Judges in closing poll site.
Election Judge Responsibilities - Assist Supervising Judges and share responsibilities of operating poll site, including, but not limited to:
> Open and set up poll > Post signs > Greet voters > Assist voters as needed > Issue “I Voted” stickers > Assist Supervising Judges in closing poll
Supervising Judge Responsibilities - Responsible for operations at poll
- Notify election office of absences
- Assign duties to election judges
- Provide directions in setting up poll
- Open poll at 6:00 a.m.
- Manage processing of voters
- Officially close poll at 7:00 p.m.
- Responsible for preparing designated supplies to be picked up

ADDITIONAL ELECTION POLL WORKER OPPORTUNITIES Deputy Commissioners (DC’s) work in a bi‑partisan team to visit assigned poll sites throughout election day to monitor and ensure voting rights procedures, compliance and laws governing elections in the state of Missouri. Authorized to report any irregularity or failure of duty, assist judges and voters – serves as the eyes and ears of the election board (must designate a party preference). Voter/Poll Assistance Specialists (VAS/PAS’s) assist voters by verifying their registration, correct polling location or other information using the Missouri Certified Voter Registration database and a laptop computer or telephone (provided by the election board). Pickup Personnel (PUP’s) ensure timely retrieval of ballots and voting supplies from poll sites and deliver the supplies to the election board headquarters (a 3-4 hour shift). Greeters/Locators help minimize lines at the polls by ensuring the voter is at the correct poll, has the correct identification, and is in the correct line. Compensation ranges from $25.00 to $125.00 depending on the position worked. Training and supplies (including laptops) are provided. JACKSON COUNTY ELECTION BOARD Election Judge Questionnaire (PDF) Election Worker Questionnaire (PDF) Election Judges An Election Judge must be a registered voter in the jurisdiction of the election authority for which he or she is appointed. Each election judge shall be a person of good repute and character who can speak, read and write the English language. No person shall serve as an election judge at any polling place in which his or her name or the name of a relative within the second degree, by consanguinity or affinity, appears on the ballot. However, no relative of any unopposed candidate shall be disqualified from serving as an election judge in any election jurisdiction of the state. No election judge shall, during his or her term of office, hold any other public office, other than as a member of a political party committee or township office, except any person who is an employee of the State of Missouri or who is appointed to or employed by a board or commission of a political subdivision or special district may serve as an election judge except at a polling place where such political subdivision or special district has an issue on candidate on the ballot. An Election Judge must "Rise and Shine" to be at their polling place by 5:00 a.m. to unstrap voting machines, break seals on machines, assemble supplies including precinct registers and ballots to ready the poll to open promptly at 6:00 a.m. for voting. From 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., each judge will rotate duties with the other judges in the poll greeting voters, verifying names and addresses and issuing ballots. Then at 7:00 p.m. the team of judges opens the ballot box, count the ballots and prepare them for delivery to the counting center. All judges are assigned to attend a required training session prior to each election. Special Deputies
Deputy Election Commissioners are dedicated people who hit the streets at 6:00 a.m. to visit the polls. They are an extension of the staff of the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners. Their prime responsibilities are to assist judges with voter problems, replenish election supplies in the polls and render support to the judges on Election Day. Each team visits approximately ten different polls four times during the day. Most of the deputies serve as pick-up teams after the polls close, transporting the ballot carriers from the remote parts of the county to the office in Independence. Others are assigned to night duties at the election board office. Each Deputy is assigned to attend a required training session one week prior to each election. Technicians
Technicians are people trained to help the Election Judges with the new electronic voting equipment. They are assigned 3 or 4 polling places to visit Election Day morning and evening, to help set up and close down the equipment. Technicians should feel comfortable using a computer, have their own car and cell phone. They must also be able to lift heavy 40 lbs and be agile. Attendance to a training session assigned prior to Election Day is required. Technician Pay is as follows: - Part-time - $150.00
- Full-time - $200.00
- Mileage - $.585 per mile
Office Workers Election Office Workers arrive at the Election Board Office at 5:00 a.m. and work until the ballots are tabulated, usually around 9:30 p.m. Typical duties assigned to Office Workers include (but not inclusive) answering phone questions from the public and election poll Judges, counting Absentee ballots, receiving ballot carriers, and preparing ballots for counting. Office Workers are required to attend a training session prior to Election Day so that they may better serve the callers. Office Worker Pay is as follows: - Day - $130.00
- Night - $35.00

Election Assistant Specialists The Election Assistant Specialist arrives at their assigned poll location at 6:00 a.m. and works until 7:00 p.m. on Election Day. They perform various duties. They should feel comfortable with using a computer as they will be required to operate an "Election Assistant" (Palm Pilot) in their primary duty of assisting voters within the poll as well as directing voters to correct polls. Attendance to an assigned training session is required before each election. If you would like to be an Election Assistant Specialist, please contact the Election Board Office or fill out the Election Worker Questionnaire form (indicating "for Election Assistant Specialist" in the Comments section) and mailing it in to our office. Election Assistant Specialist Pay is as follows: - Day including Training Session - $120.00
Night Workers Election Night Workers arrive at the Election Board office around 6:45 p.m. and work until all ballots are tabulated, usually around 9:30 p.m. They perform various duties from transporting ballot carriers to preparing the ballots for counting. There is an equal number of Republicans and Democrats working in teams participating in the process. No training is necessary, as all new election workers have a teammate who has served as a Election Worker before. All Election Night Workers are paid $35.00 for their service.
