HISTORIC SITES

Explore the rich history of Jackson County at Jackson County Parks & Recreation’s historic Sites. Fort Osage, built by William Clark in 1808, brings the challenges and excitement of the American frontier vividly to life. The living history programming at Missouri Town 1855 takes you back to the simple life of a mid-19th century western Missouri community against a backdrop of authentic 150 year old buildings.

Little Blue Trace Trail
Little Blue Trace BicyclistJackson County’s Little Blue Trace is the backbone of a trail system that has the potential to connect the trail systems of Independence, Kansas City, Lee’s Summit and Grandview, Missouri. The Little Blue Trace also serves as a major artery of the Mid-America Regional Council’s proposed Metro Green Trail System, a grouping of trails interconnecting the seven County metropolitan areas. Jackson County owns the Trace’s 1,856 acres of parkland stretching for 26 miles. The long-term goal for the Little Blue Trace Trail has always been to fully construct the 26 miles of trail. With the high level of intergovernmental cooperation between Jackson County Parks & Recreation, the City of Independence and the City of Kansas City, this goal is in progress of being met. All three municipalities hosted a Ribbon Cutting and Groundbreaking Ceremony on June 3, 2011.
