The Jackson County Department of Emergency Preparedness & Homeland Security has merged the County preparedness/response operations with the Independence Emergency Preparedness Office to form the Eastern Jackson County Emergency Management Team.
The Eastern Jackson County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), located at 951 North Spring in Independence, Missouri, has recently received two federal grants and will soon inhabit a new state-of-the-art 5,000 square foot facility in Independence. In addition, a new Emergency Resource Center for Eastern Jackson County has been established at 201 West Lexington in Independence. The Emergency Resource Center will house day-to-day operations as well as a remote Joint Information Center during a disaster or crisis.
The Eastern Jackson County Emergency Management team has developed two web-based emergency response and communication tools:
The Jackson County Emergency Action Journal and the Eastern Jackson County “Ready to Help.org” are both designed to be resource and information sites for emergency managers and various agencies during times of disaster.
The Jackson County Department of Emergency Preparedness has received the following awards:
- 2009 National Association of Safety Professionals certification: "Emergency Management Specialist"
- 2009 FEMA/Citizen Corps National Achievement Award Finalist: "Preparing Community Organization" presented by FEMA Director Craig Fugate
- 2010 FEMA/Citizen Corps National Achievement Award Honorable Mention: "Celebrating Resilient Communities."
- 2009/2010 Global Awards Competition Internal Association Emergency Management (IAEM) National Award Winner from IAEM_USA: "Partners in Preparation"
International Award presented to Brussels, Belgium and National Award presented to Eastern Jackson County, Missouri.
