In accordance with Missouri law, the Jackson County Assessment Department uses National Automobile Dealers' Association (NADA) guidelines to assess vehicle property values. The NADA actually raised the value of many trucks and sports utility vehicles in 2009 -- up from their 2008 values -- which impacted the personal property tax bills of some Jackson County taxpayers. > MORE
The Assessment Department is primarily responsible for the valuation of ALL real and personal property in Jackson County.
Within the County, there are approximately 289,000 real property accounts, 310,000 individual personal property accounts and 28,000 business personal property accounts. All personal property accounts are revalued annually through declaration forms, reviews and audits. Real property is revalued every odd-numbered year -- 2009, 2011, etc. -- with the exception of the annual review of building permits, splits/combines, new plats and taxpayer review requests.
The result of this process is to manage the assessed valuation tax base for Jackson County that provides funding for all other County functions, as well as for the numerous political subdivisions, such as school districts, within the County.
