Scholars will present current research relating to the War of 1812 and its impact on the western frontier. Interpretive panels highlighting the War and the contribution of the Fort’s company will also be featured. This interesting program will begin with a presentation by our staff curator on the history of the oldest cemetery in Jackson County. Information will be given on some of the notable interments including Zenus Leonard, a colorful early mountain man. Special attention will be given to the 48 United States Army soldiers who died while serving at Fort Osage during its occupation from 1808-1827. A guided tour of the cemetery concludes the program.

Our Missouri ancestors depended on flocks of sheep not only for food but also for their valuable wool. The entire process of using wool including shearing, washing, carding, spinning, dyeing and weaving are presented in this annual event. Have you ever been curious about that box of arrowheads that you might have found or had been given to you by a relative? Join us at Fort Osage where professional archaeologists will be available to determine the approximate age and origin of the archaeological material, and other historic and prehistoric artifacts. Your artifacts will be placed in a historic context which will help you better understand who made the object and how it was used. Expert advice will also be available on how to properly store your artifacts.

The diverse terrain surrounding Fort Osage presents a perfect setting for this guided program. After a brief introduction in the Education Center by our staff naturalist, the group will embark on a guided tour of both the upland and floodplain zones. Various species of plants will be identified with special attention given to those which were identified during the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Participants will see how invasive, non native, species threaten plants native to Missouri. Please wear hiking boots or shoes and bring insect repellant and a canteen. Binoculars, cameras and sketchbooks are also recommended.

Throughout the day staff and volunteers of Missouri Town 1855 will introduce the kids to time-honored and fun filled activities. Leave the electronic toys and batteries at home, all that is needed is imagination and enthusiasm! Featured activities include: Pie Eating Contest, Candle Dipping, Spelling Bees, Hoop Rolling, Game of Graces, Cracker Whistling, Marbles, Tug-of-War, Tin Punching, Jump Rope, Stilts. A special exhibit will provide information about Jackson County’s expansive trail system and outdoor education programs.

Join a professional archaeologist as he explains how the archaeological investigations at Fort Osage over the past 60 years has expanded our knowledge not only of the Fort but also the indigenous people who occupied the site almost 200 years ago. All aspects of archaeology will be covered including how the new technology of ground penetrating radar and other non-invasive methods have recently been used at Fort Osage to further understand the history of the site.

Visitors will encounter a variety of unworldly sights and sounds at this fun-filled family oriented Halloween event. Executed with historical accuracy, this annual re-enactment relives events surrounding the prelude to the War of 1812, as Fort Osage hears for the first time war has been declared with Britain. Musket and cannons are made ready, civilians are conscripted and both residents and soldiers stationed at this remote frontier outpost are on alert. Visitors can literally feel the tension of the unknown and share the fear and excitement with our re-enactors as Fort Osage prepares for war!
