In 2008, Jackson County formed a County Municipal Court to adjudicate general County Ordinance violations. The court held its first session in July of 2008.
Rather than the 16th Circuit Court, the County Municipal Court considers all tickets for general County Ordinance violations posted June 1, 2008, or later. Municipal Court dockets are held on the first and third Wednesday of the month at the Independence Courthouse Annex in the Jury Room on the first floor:
Independence Courthouse Annex
308 W. Kansas
Independence, Missouri 64050
Questions can be referred to our County Municipal Court Administrator at (816) 881-1697.
All tickets on general County Ordinance violations written prior to June 1, 2008, will continue to be considered by the 16th Circuit Court. All state offenses will continue to be handled through the Circuit Court. Questions can be referred to the Circuit Court Criminal Records Division at (816) 881-4500 in Independence or (816) 881-4350 in Kansas City.
Examples of general County Ordinance violations include food inspections, animal control, code enforcement, park citations issued by the respective enforcement department personnel, as well as traffic or other ordinance violations issued by the County Sheriff’s Department.
