Jackson County recently was awarded $150,000 from the One-KC Brownfields Coalition to conduct an extensive environmental study of the old Rock Island Railroad Corridor, which runs through southern Kansas City, Raytown and Lee's Summit.

"This is the next stop in moving forward with trail and transit options for our community," said Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders.

The study, building on work completed in 2011 and 2012, will identify potential environmental concerns along the corridor and include strategies for addressing those concerns. The coalition's award announcement represents a step forward for Jackson County and the entire metropolitan area in acquiring this important rail corridor and developing a regional transit system.
