Legislators Sworn In Prior To First Meeting Of 2011
Dennis Waits Named Chairman
Dennis Waits (3rd District) is sworn in as a County Legislator by Clerk Mary Jo Spino just prior to the Legislature's first meeting of 2011, during which Waits was appointed the 2011 chairman .
JANUARY 5, 2011 -- Within minutes of taking their oaths of office and convening their first meeting of 2011 Tuesday (January 4), Jackson County's Legislators selected, by acclamation, Dennis Waits to serve as the 2011 Legislative chairman. Waits, the 3rd District Legislator, most recently served as chairman in 2008.
"Thank you very much to my colleagues on the Legislature for your support and confidence in me," said Waits. "I look forward to working with every one of you over the next four years and this year as chairman."
Greg Grounds (5th District) was named Vice Chairman for 2011. He and Waits won re-election to the Legislature last fall, along with Theresa Garza Ruiz (1st District At-Large), Fred Arbanas (3rd District At-Large), Scott Burnett (1st District); James Tindall, Sr. (2nd District); Dan Tarwater (4th District) and Bob Spence (6th District). Crystal Williams was elected to her first term as the 2nd District At-Large Legislator.
Waits, a life-long resident of the 3rd District, was first elected to represent the district in 1986 -- the same year he graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. He is an attorney in private practice and has also been a small business owner.
Grounds, a life-long resident of Eastern Jackson County, began his second term today as the 5th District Legislator, having first been elected in 2006. He previously served as mayor of Blue Springs. Since 1977, he has practiced law, currently with the firm of Grounds, Rose & Emke.
