County Executive Tournament Raises
$18,000 For Operation Breakthrough

County Executive Mike Sanders and Jackson County Legislator Dan Tarwater (4th District) join kids from Operation Breakthrough in celebrating a successful 2009 County Executive Golf Tournament.

SEPTEMBER 15, 2009 -- Normally during a golf tournament, players tee up the ball and envision scoring birdies or eagles. During the County Executive Golf Tournament on September 11, however, the main objective wasn't recording the lowest scorer, but raising more money -- for the kids.

After the four-player scramble on Friday at the renovated Fred Arbanas Golf Course, tournament host, County Executive Mike Sanders, presented an $18,000 check to the tournament's beneficiary, Operation Breakthrough.

"While I'm sure they also come out here to enjoy a little friendly competition, I know everyone who enters this tournament does so to support a great cause," Sanders said. "We couldn't have asked for better conditions, and I know everyone enjoyed playing on what is absolutely gorgeous course. I have to thank tournament sponsors, committee members and each team whose hard work made this tournament a great success ."

Putting for a good cause.

Since 1971, Operation Breakthrough has dedicated itself to helping children in need. The nationally accredited not-for-profit organization offers a wide range of educational programs -- early childhood, before and after school, school enrichment -- to encourage children to reach their full potential through education. The list of Operation Breakthrough programs goes on and on, including immunizations, health clinics, USDA-approved meal programs, violence-prevention programs, literacy programs, emergency aid, adult and children therapy, and nutritional programs.

Twenty-nine teams entered this year's County Executive Tournament. While entry fees accounted for the bulk of the donation to Operation Rescue, additional funds were raised through a silent/live auction and hole sponsorships.
