MARCH 27, 2008 -- For several years, Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders has supported developing a Regional Detention Center that would serve not only the County but also all municipalities within Jackson County.

Sanders, who served five years as Jackson County Prosecutor prior to being elected County Executive in November of 2006, joined current County Prosecutor Jim Kanatzar at a press conference with Kansas City officials March 26 to discuss the regional jail concept. Kansas City Councilwoman Cathy Jolly (6th district at-large) announced that she would sponsor a resolution expressing the City Council's interest in developing a Regional Correctional System during the Council's legislative session March 27.

Jolly's Council resolution expresses Kansas City's interest in collaborating with municipalities within Jackson County and the County itself, to create the regional system. It also directs Kansas City's Manager, Wayne A. Cauthen, to develop a timeline for the process to proceed.

Sanders, Kanatzar and Jolly were joined at the press conference by Kansas City Chief of Police James Corwin and Kansas City Neighborhood and Community Services Director Les Washington.
