Jackson County Executive to Participate in
Child Abuse Awareness Event with Operation Breakthrough

April 13, 2014 (KANSAS CITY, MO) – Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders will join Sister Berta Sailer of Operation Breakthrough and other public officials on Monday, April 14 in honoring children who have been victims of abuse or neglect.

Monday’s event will begin at 1:00 P.M. and take place outside the Historic Truman Courthouse in downtown Independence (112 West Lexington, Independence, Missouri).

The event is part of a series of programs taking place in conjunction with National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Over 100 tombstones bearing the names of children who have died as a result of abuse or neglect will be displayed.

“We use tombstones as reminders that children in our community die needlessly every year, due to abuse and neglect,” said Sailer. “We need to encourage people to take appropriate action when they suspect that a child or a family needs help.”

Note: In case of inclement weather, the event will take place in the public meeting room, located on the 2nd floor of the Truman Courthouse.
