Executive to Discuss County Levy Recommendations

September 10, 2009 (KANSAS CITY, MO) – Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders will be available tomorrow to discuss his recommendations to the County Legislature concerning the 2009 Jackson County tax levy.  Sanders will be available at 10:30 a.m.; Jackson County Courthouse, second floor.

A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for Monday September 14 during the regular weekly County Legislative meeting at the Independence Courthouse Annex at 308 West Kansas, Independence. The 2008 levy for Jackson County was set by the Legislature at 0.543 including; 0.1534 for the General Fund levy, 0.1560 for the Health Fund levy, 0.1416 for the Road and Bridge levy and 0.0920 for the Parks levy.

Sanders said today, “We have been doing more with less in County government for several years and this will have to continue for the foreseeable future. I cannot recommend an increase in the County tax levy while citizens in our community are suffering through these tough economic times.”

County Legislators agreed that now is not the time to raise the tax levy. 2nd District At-Large Legislator Henry Rizzo said, “I know it’s tough for everyone right now. County government is no different. Although this next budget cycle may really test us, we need to keep the big picture in mind and tighten our belt a bit.”  4th District Legislator Dan Tarwater added, “In these trying times I can’t see how we can do anything other than leaving the levy right where it is.”  While 3rd District Legislator Dennis Waits acknowledged, “I’m all for keeping the County levy unchanged in the interest of helping the citizens of our community.”
