Regional Correctional Center
Opening A Day Early

July 30, 2009 (KANSAS CITY, MO) - Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders will announce the opening of the new Regional Correctional Center (RCC) during a news conference at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2009. The news conference will be held at the Jackson County Detention Center (1300 Cherry Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64106).

The County-operated RCC will begin accepting detainees from the Kansas City Police Department and City Municipal Court on Friday, marking the official opening of the new facility one day ahead of schedule.

"The opening of the Regional Correctional Center is a big victory for public safety in Kansas City and Jackson County," Sanders said. "The City will be able to close MCI and see some significant savings and participate in a regional solution for what is clearly a regional problem. The County is hopeful that this is just the first step in fostering greater cooperation related to public safety issues."

Housed within the renovated Community Justice Building with a capacity of 106 male and 48 female inmates, the RCC is connected to the Jackson County Detention Center via a secure underground walkway. The Kansas City municipal inmates will all be held separately in the newly renovated facility.
