Statement on funding for
Jackson County Sports Complex

March 26, 2009 (KANSAS CITY, MO) – The following statement was issued today by: Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders, Jackson County Sports Complex Authority Chairman Michael Smith and Jackson County Sports Complex Authority Executive Director Jim Rowland.

We commend the Kansas City Council for all the hard work and effort that they have put forth, individually and collectively, to reach a resolution on the Truman Sports Complex funding matter.  This will put Kansas City in a position of honoring their commitment to our community and upholding the leases with both professional sports franchises, the Royals and the Chiefs.

We appreciate the City Council vote to allocate $1.7 million in direct funding for the Sports Complex. We will be working with council members and staff to ensure that $2 million is available on an annual basis consistent with the leases and past agreements.  We have met with Council members and City staff and are confident that we will agree to a long-term mechanism for funding the stadiums that will be agreeable to all parties.

For this calendar year, a City Council majority has voted to direct City staff to identify an additional $300 thousand which will be allocated to the Jackson County Sports Complex. This will bring the total allocation to $2 million and honor the commitments previously made by the city.
