Saturday, July 12 Wild West Tour 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
$58 per person (minimum 30 / maximum 52) The Pony Express Museum
On April 3, 1860, a lone rider left on horseback from the gates of one of the nation’s most historic landmarks, the Pikes Peak Stables in St. Joseph, Missouri. Carrying saddlebags filled with our nation’s hopes and dreams, the riders traveled 2000 miles west to Sacramento, California. These brave young souls raced against nature’s cruel elements and rugged terrain in an attempt to unite a country separated by distance. Today the stables continue to stand as a tribute to the legend and legacy of the Pony Express and its enduring era. Experience the many exciting, educational, state of the art exhibits conveying the need, creation, operation and termination of the Pony Express. Whatever your age, you’re sure to be captivated by the stories and images on an era long passed. Our next stop on the tour is…. The Jesse James Home
The James Home is now located in St. Joseph’s museum corridor but was only two blocks away when outlaw Jesse James was gunned down on April 3, 1882, by Bob Ford. After the killing, the investigation into the death was conducted and Mrs. James, her two children, and Jesse’s mother stayed in the neighboring Patee House for two nights after he was killed. The James Home contains a number of items owned by Jesse James and his family, and new exhibits on the 1995 exhumation of the infamous outlaw, including coffin handles, bits of wood, and a pin Jesse James wore in his death photo, as well as numerous photos taken during the exhumation. In 1995, top forensic scientist Professor James E. Starrs, of George Washington University, conducted an exhumation of the grave of Jesse James. In February 1996, he announced that DNA tests performed on the remains and compared to the DNA of existing known relatives proved a 99.7% chance that the body in the grave is that of Jesse James. Then we’re off to… Hall Street
Built during St. Joseph’s “Golden Age,” the Hall Street mansions, along with many others, symbolize the prosperity and optimism of the time. The Hall Street area became St. Joseph’s first Historic District in 1974 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lunch will be served at Barbosa’s Mexican Restaurant. Our recipes are "Grandma and Grandpa" Barbosa's from "South of the Border”, with a touch of North American flavor. All the food served is homemade, from start to finish here in Barbosa's kitchen.
