Gain a better understanding of the 19th century way of life.  Historic interpreters will teach you blacksmithing, how to bake a pie on the hearth, make lye soap and much more!

Pre-registration and payment are required to attend a workshop.

Workshops not meeting the minimum reservation requirement will be canceled.

Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis until class size is met.  Unless otherwise noted, all materials are included in the cost of the workshop and will be provided by the instructor.

MARCH                                         


March 8     Seamen's Scarf 
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Cost: $10 + supplies 

During the Spanish American War the Ladies Aid Society would knit scarves and other items for the men at sea for Christmas day.  Join us and knit a seamen's scarf for yourself.


March 15     Spring is Coming

Time: 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Ages:  5-10 (Children must be accompanied by an adult at no charge)

Join us in welcoming Spring!  We will play a game, natural dye an egg, make a decoration, listen to a story, and decorate a cookie.

APRIL


April 5     Soap Saver
Time:  9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Participants will knit a soap saver to hold small bits of soap.  Participants should have a basic knowledge of  knitting.


April 19   Hearth Cooking-Common Breads
Time:  9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Ages:  Adults Only

What were the common breads in the 19th Century?  We will be making and eating cornbread, biscuits and griddle cakes.
 


April 26     Blacksmithing II

April 26     Splint Weaving

"Weave" a new seat for your chair or footstool.

May 17     Hearth Cooking - Meal

Accomplish the skill of cooking over the hearth 1800's style.  Afterwards savor your accomplishments.

May 24     Tea for Two
Time:  10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Enjoy learning tea etiquette with your best friend.  Each person brings their favorite teacup, saucer and spoon.  Bring finger tea tidbits for 10 people.


May 24     Gourd Canteen

Cost:  $15 (cost includes gourd)

Clean and prepare a gourd to make a canteen.  Workshop includes information regarding gourd cultivation and other decorative uses.
 


May 24     Spinning & Drop Spindle
Time:  10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Class Size:  5
Cost:  $10 + supplies

Learn how to clean and card wool.  This beginner class will take you from cleaning and carding wool to making yarn.  Bring a spinning wheel in good working order.


May 31     Teddy Bears & Teacups

Time:  11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Ages:  7-12 (Children must be accompanied by an adult or parent at no extra charge)

Has your teddy bear been at a loss about tea etiquette?  Please bring your teddy bear and learn about tea etiquette, play a game, hear a story and make a craft.  Tea savories will be served.

What could be more relaxing than escaping to the garden with a cup of tea.  Herbs from the garden provide the path to a slower pace of life.  Tea will put a smile on your face and a spring to your step.  Come roam the garden of herbal teas.

 

JULY

July 12     Handkerchief Edging

Participants will crochet an edging onto a handkerchief.  Participants with limited crochet experience are welcome!

July 26     Triangular Shawl Weaving
Time:  9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Ages:  Adults only
Class Size:  6
Cost:  $20 + supplies

Start an adult shawl that can be used as a baby wrap or small blanket.  Class cost includes the use of the triangular loom.  Plan to return to finish.  Total time is 12-15 hours.

You will make a dish rag using this unique form of crocheting.  You do not have to know crochet techniques.  Beginners welcome!

We will be weaving Mary's Market basket, a strong sturdy useful basket.  Measures approximately 10" x 12 1/2" x 7 1/2" tall.

 

NOVEMBER

November 1     Deck the Halls

A demonstration of decorating a wreath, mantel and entry to your home.  Participants will make a Christmas vase and place card for their table to take home.
 


November 1     Soap Making
Time:  9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Make soap with lye and lard using the cold water method.  You will be taking home a bar of soap you have made in class.  Bring a sack lunch if you need to eat at noon.  Class may be completed by noon, depending on the outside termperature.


November 8     Hearth Cooking - Meal

DECEMBER

December 6     Decorating the Tree for Christmas
Time:  10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Ages:  All
Class Size:  12
Cost:  $10 + supplies

We will start the day by making decorations while warming yourself with hot cider and cookies.  Make four different ornaments for the tree--one for the tree and one to take home with you.  We will be bringing in and decorating the tree for the Flintlock Church.
