I no longer own this car. Do I still owe this bill?

You owe taxes on any vehicles, boats, motors, trailers, mobile homes, motor homes or motorcycles that you owned on January 1 of the tax year.

I bought another car during the middle of the year. Do I owe taxes on that car?

No, you will not owe taxes on any vehicle purchase until it has been owned on January 1 of tax year.

Why is my tax bill higher than usual?

Taxes are based on the levy rate and on the assessed value of the vehicle. The assessed value is 1/3 of the approximate retail value of the vehicle. The levy rate for your school district or city may have risen with a voter approved tax increase. You may have purchased an additional vehicle or one of higher value, which may have increased your assessed value. If you have moved, the levy rate may have increased.

Why does my bill show a late filing fee?

Jackson County did not receive your declaration before March 31st as required by State Law.

I am divorced or legally separated and want to pay taxes only on my vehicle. How do I do this?

If the divorce or legal separation occurred prior to January 1, submit a copy of your divorce decree or legal separation documents stating who receives which vehicle.

Why do I have to pay a city license fee?

The city you reside in assesses city license fees (also known as city stickers) and the county collects the fee for them.

What do I need to do to license my car if I am relocating here from another state?

Bring the following information into one of our offices:

  • Title or Current and previous year's vehicle registration on all your vehicles; and
  • Proof that you resided in another state on Jan. 1 of the prior two years. (example: rent receipts; utility bills; credit card statement; bank statements for any state except Kansas, Federal 1040 forms; post marked envelopes; vehicle registration from previous state.) Remember to bring proof from as close to January 1 as possible for both prior years.

The county will provide you with a Personal Property Clearance Notice to show that you do not owe taxes to Jackson County on that vehicle.

In order to obtain license plates, take the following to the Department of Motor Vehicle:

  • Title or vehicle registration from other state
  • Proof of insurance
  • Vehicle Inspection
  • Personal Property Clearance Notice
What do I need to do to license my car if I am relocating from another county in Missouri?

Come into one of our offices and bring the title or current vehicle registration on all your vehicles. Jackson County will set up an account for you for future years. You will use your paid receipt or Personnal Property Clearance Notice from your prior county at the Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain the plates or renewal for your vehicle. Any changes will have to be done in the county for which you were a resident on Jan 1 of the prior year. Please note that if you fail to come into our offices with the proper paperwork, you will not be set up on our County system to receive a tax bill for future years.

I have a leased vehicle. What do I need in order to renew the license tags?

You need a personal property tax receipt with your leasing company's name and your name as leasee on it. If you lease from more than one leasing company, you will need separate receipts for each company. You will also have a separate receipt for any vehicle that you own and do not lease. Take the receipt to the Motor Vehicle Department for the actual plates or renewal stickers.

This is the first time I have ever leased a vehicle. How do I get a tax receipt for it?

You would be eligible for Personnal Property Clearance Notice, which you obtain by bringing the paperwork on the vehicle (MO Title Application or Leasing Contract) to any of the county tax offices. After you receive the Tax Clearance or Personnal Property Clearance Notice, take it to the Motor Vehicle Department for the actual plates.
