How do I obtain a copy of my birth certificate?
Birth records may be obtained from The Bureau of Vital Records, Post Office Box 570, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102, or if born in Kansas City, Missouri, those records may be obtained from The Kansas City Bureau of Vital Records, 2400 Troost, Kansas City, Missouri. If born in the State of Missouri prior to 1920, a copy of your birth certificate may also be obtained through the Health Department in Independence, 313 South Liberty, Independence, MO. There is a $10.00 fee and a blood relative must pick up the certificate. Their phone number is (816) 881-4424.
What is the procedure for obtaining a copy of a document?
Clerks are available to assist you in obtaining copies of recorded real estate documents, marriage licenses and UCC filings. They will instruct you in how to search for a document utilizing the indexes, microfilm viewers and PC On-Line Search System. These instructions are limited to ten minutes. However, if you cannot perform your own search, you may request that the clerk perform the search for you.

Is it possible to receive a copy by mailing in the request?
Yes, requests can be mailed to either the downtown office or to the office in Independence. Checks should be made payable to the "Recorder of Deeds."
Can you do a document search for me over the telephone?
No. Telephone searches are not conducted. You may come into the Recorder of Deeds Department and search our data base for the information you need, mail in a request enclosing a check for the copy fees applicable (see above), or you may perform your search on-line by accessing our website at www.jacksongov.org.
Can you help me complete a records search?
Yes, we can assist you in reviewing indexes, microfilm, computer records, etc.; however, please be advised that we are prohibited by state statute from making determinations on records stored in this office. Professional title companies and real estate abstracters do engage in authoritative searches of this nature, and can assist in these endeavors.
