Emergency Preparedness
The Office of Emergency Preparedness is responsible for preparing, planning and coordinating the various agencies that would respond to emergency situations within Jackson County. This office prepares for disasters and large scale emergencies that are either man-made or are caused by nature. It also coordinates both planning and response activities with other local jurisdictions, with County agencies including the Sheriff’s Department, Health Department, Public Works, GIS/MIS and the Medical Examiner.
Emergency Preparedness coordinates its activities with the State of Missouri Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and with federal (FEMA) coordinators to ensure that the lives of the citizens of Jackson County and their property are protected. Created by an Executive Order on November 2, 2007, the department will develop and maintain an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), which will then be reviewed and certified by SEMA annually. This office will operate a functional Emergency Operations Center (EOC) that is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and will oversee the training of various County agencies, the development of County facility evacuation plans, generating federal grant funding and be involved in community service through volunteer groups in Jackson County. The Director of Emergency Preparedness serves on the Regional Homeland Security Council (RHSCC), the Local Planning Committee (LEPC) and the Metropolitan Emergency Managers Committee. The Director is responsible for maintaining agreements of “Mutual Aid” that involves surrounding agencies, jurisdictions and counties in both Missouri and Kansas.
The Office of Emergency Preparedness will coordinate its emergency response activities through the Eastern Jackson County Emergency Operations Center in Independence and through the Kansas City Emergency Operations Center. |
