While many counties are governed by councils or commissions, in Jackson County, Missouri, the legislative body of the county is called the legislature. The County Charter calls for the direct election of nine members to the County Legislature. Six are elected from smaller districts in the county, and three at-large members are elected in somewhat larger at-large districts. The legislature meets once a week, alternating between the courthouses in Independence and Kansas City. Much like the federal government, Jackson County is organized into three distinct branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. The Legislature is responsible for all legislative duties in the county, including the introduction and enacting of all county ordinances and resolutions, subject to the approval of the county executive. 1st District at Large 2nd District at Large 3rd District at Large 1st District 2nd District 3rd District 4th District 5th District 6th District Click here for scheduled meetings, agendas, and journals.
