County Executive Frank White, Jr., introduced former Kansas City Police Chief Darryl Forte’ as Jackson County Sheriff during a press conference this morning.

“One thing that stood out to me about Darryl is his focus on the people, which is a priority we both share,” White said. “He understands that regardless of our race, gender, economic status or education, we all want the same thing. We all want to live a safe and enjoyable life. I look forward to working with him to achieve that goal.”

“As the first African-American Police Chief of Kansas City, Forte’ was instrumental in bridging the gap between officers and the community. He provided support to crime victims, focused on diversity and made the physical, mental and emotional well-being of officers a priority,” he said.

“Additionally, Darryl has put together an impressive plan to build on the strengths of the Sheriff’s Office. He is a man with undeniable passion for our community and I am honored to be able to name Mr. Darryl Forte’ the next Sheriff of Jackson County,” White said.

After being sworn in by Presiding Judge John Torrence and receiving his badge from White, Forte’ thanked the county executive, “He didn’t have to pick me.”

Forte’ also thanked everyone for their support over the years and promised to “run hard every day.” He also said, “I am looking for input from everyone and am not going to make a lot of decisions right off. So feel free to give me your input. I don’t want you to think I am not doing anything right off. I need a lot more information than I already have.”

Forte replaces Mike Sharp who resigned from the position last month. Following Sharp’s resignation White put together a nominating committee to help select his replacement.

“It took great collaboration, great support and communication that brought us to this point,” White said. “When I decided to form a nominating committee to conduct a transparent and professional process for Jackson County Sheriff, I reached out to nine community leaders asking for their help. Each and every one of them immediately said yes. Another didn’t hesitate to serve when there was a conflict.”

A dozen people applied for the position and the committee presented White with three finalists; Forte’, Rosilyn Allen and Mike Rogers. “Each of these three individuals is impressive, accomplished and has dedicated their professional lives to keeping our community safe,” White said.

Forte’ will serve as sheriff until January with election for a permanent replacement to be held in November.
