Jackson County Emergency Management Team

The Jackson County Department of Emergency Preparedness and the City of Independence Emergency Management Offices co-operate the Independence / Jackson County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 951 North Spring in Independence. The concept of developing a jointly held and controlled EOC is unique in the state of Missouri and is viewed as a Regional Emergency Operations Center.

The Independence /Jackson County EOC works in concert with the County Emergency Preparedness Offices at 201 W. Lexington, also in Independence. The County Offices maintain the day to day operations of Emergency Preparedness but, also serves as a Resource Center to the Emergency Operations Center. 

  • The County Emergency Preparedness Office maintains pertinent emergency management related data for incorporated and unincorporated jurisdictions in Eastern Jackson County
  • The County Office is available to  serve as a Joint Information Center during times of major emergency related events
  • The County Office in conjunction with the Independence/Jackson County EOC  serves as a ”backup”  EOC for jurisdictions in Eastern Jackson County
  • The County Emergency Preparedness Office also makes available comprehensive emergency related plans including debris management, County Declarations of Emergency and Coordinated emergency response activities.
  • The County Emergency Preparedness Office assists in coordinating regional exercise operations and County sponsored National Weather Service weather training events.
  • The County Emergency Preparedness Office has its own volunteer meteorologist who gives the department advanced weather data and insight for both the Emergency Preparedness Office and the Independence/Jackson County EOC.

  • 2009 National Association of Safety Professionals certification: "Emergency Management Specialist"
  • 2009 FEMA/Citizen Corps National Achievement Award Finalist: "Preparing Community Organization" presented by FEMA Director Craig Fugate
  • 2010 FEMA/Citizen Corps National Achievement Award Honorable Mention: "Celebrating Resilient Communities."
  • 2009/2010 Global Awards Competition Internal Association Emergency Management (IAEM) National Award Winner from IAEM_USA: "Partners in Preparation"
  • International Award presented to Brussels, Belgium and National Award presented to Eastern Jackson County, Missouri.
